So what is everyone else doing?
When it comes to soundproofing treatments for floor or soundproofing products to select for your treatment for floors there are so many option available to you in the market. These days every man and his dog’ are trying to tell you that they have a solution to this age old problem.

The reality is that if you think that floor soundproofing is just a case of sticking some thin foam or squashy membrane to a flooring tile or flooring plank then you couldn’t be futher from the truth.
Knowing your problem is half of the battle and in this section of our website we are only going to focus on the primary two most obvious scenarios:
- (1) Airborne Noise
- (2) Structural Borne Impact Noise
(1) Airborne Noise Airborne Noise related to flooring is basically when you have a sound source that is creating noise either from your flat or from below and you want to create a barrier to stop that noise from transferring from space to space. The materials that you required depend on the power level of energy involved.
The approach this type of problem requires a comblination of materials and in a specific order depending on what types of noise are involved. So Amplified Music for instance is very different from conversation noise and again the same can be said for singing or musical instruments.

(2) Structural Borne Impact Noise
If you live in a HDB Property in Singapore, Condo, High Rise Flat in London, Mega Housing Skyscrapers in China or in USA then we have all heard of the dreaded footstep noise, chairs dragging, marbles dropping, creaks, rattles and all that Jazz.
This is the noise that is caused from you walking around at night. We are so desperate as human beings to not cause our neighbours trouble or to be the focus of compliants that we will do anything for this to go away or think we are doing something positive.
That’s why we always get conned into buying these fake flooring products that do nothing.

In order to get a result you have to understand that scientifically there is something more to the engineering principle than just sticking some foam to the back of any flooring product. Which means if you want to soundproof your floor you need to create a shock absorber.
The shock absorber success is determined by the balance ratio being complementary to the weight loading of the person and the items per square meter and as Mr Nelson our senior acoustic wizard would say:-
“The ability for a flooring system to be successful in creating a soundproofing effect is dependent on the shock absorber being able to compress to no more than 50% of its mass and must not remain statically compressed as a permanent construct. “
