Soundproofing your HDB Flat

Soundproofing your HDB Flat.

One of the worst things in the world is Noise Pollution and especially in the home. As you all know living in Singapore is a tough time we as a people never seem to stop working. We work long hours and seldom get home until late.
For many of us once we get home, put up our feet and watch the latest installment of the Simpsons, South Park or Star Trek if you’re a sci-fi fan like the NoiseStop’ Gang.

Then you would think everything would be ok from here on, but that’s where the problems start. If you have a home theatre system or your interest is listening to music and a glass of wine to relax you; you can’t escape and forget.
Because your dear old neighbors’; next-door, below or above can hear almost hear everything you can and eventually they will tell you to or call HDB.

And it’s not just the sound of music or your home surround sound system. Many of us and our customers can hear the sounds of footstep noise, chairs dragged across the floor, doors closed and dogs barking, and of course the unspoken taboo subject.

Fear not, all of these problems have a cure and that cure is NoiseBlock Soundproofing products brought to you from NoiseStop Systems Singapore. Soundproofing at its best!

Everybody falls into normally two categories you either are the Noise Maker (The Source) or the other guy (The Receiver).

The Source
If your thinking of installing a sound system or home theatre the first thing you need to do is the floor. Speakers sit on the floor generally or are located very near to the floor, this results in a large amount of noise projected towards the floor and transmitted laterally and to the below unit.

Don’t waste money on elaborate speaker platform, they are basically rubber and wood and not worth the cost at all. If you really want to do that then please come to our office and we will give you some for free.

Step One: The floating Floor
The Floating Floor system is needed to create an isolator between your current floor and the building structure. The term floating means that we will use a material or sprung floor system to create the barrier. There are a few methods that available that will be suitable for different levels of noise resistance.
Not wanting to be the bearer of bad news, but please remember that plywood platforms filled with thermal insulation are of little use in dealing with the noise transference from floors. If anything plywood is conductive so it will simply bypass the system and thermal insulation has very marginal reduction in terms of dB.

Step Two: The Noise Rated Wall

Don’t listen to everything you hear on the internet, YouTube or on forums and dare we say even other soundproofing. The use of thermal insulation has long been a favorite material used by 80% of the soundproofing industry in Singapore and we and a few others being the 20% that are using the soundproofing insulation. Soundproofing insulation typically ranges from 160kg Density to 220kg Density and the best source for this insulation is NoiseBlock’s DFB 200.
Combining the DFB into a drywall system using again 16 – 20mm High Density Soundproofing Grade Board and not standard gypsum board will result in a successful barrier against the noise escaping

The Ceiling Issue

As we have said before there is nothing worse than not being able to sleep because of the noises you can hear from upstairs. This type of noise is not simple to solve at the best of times and honestly speaking we haven’t met anyone in all the years we have been doing this business that actually knew the correct way to go about doing it without charging unaffordable prices.

The Wrong Material
The thought that using the majorities choice of thermal insulation, metal U channel and wait for it gypsum board as an effective solution against impact noise could not be further from the truth.
There are some of that say using colored silicone between gypsum board can magically remove the noise, and again they are wrong.

Time and time again we have visited upset and angry customers that have been convinced that purchased these solutions with no results whatsoever.

What went wrong?
The system they used did not address the fundamental problem at hand. What actually is happening is that there is an impact to the floor above and that then is converted into vibrations that is transmitted through the 150mm concrete slab and then comes out from the other side as Airborne noise.

Our system that we use is able to convert the energy of the shockwave vibration into kinetic energy and then dissipate it across its sacrificial transmission grid.
The remaining noise enters a the room that then is confronted by a true floating ceiling system using our NoiseBlock Silencer system.
The result is depending on which option you prefer a 50% – 80% reduction in the noise.
Nothing quiet performs like our NoiseBlock Ceiling Systems.
